Fifty on Tuesday, fifty on Wednesday, and nobody remembers
Bernard King scored 50 points in back-to-back games in 2 different states, 6 weeks before the All-Star break.
No games last night. The anchor is a pair of dates: January 31 and February 1, 1984.

What last night rhymes with
The modern reference point for a scoring binge is a step-back 3 in a high-possession game. King's version was 2 feet, a shoulder and a release under half a second, taken from the left block against a defender who knew exactly what was coming.
The volume is not the remarkable part. The efficiency is. He shot 53.0% from the field the following season while averaging 32.9 points and winning the scoring title, almost entirely from inside 18 feet.
Then the playoffs. In April 1984 he averaged 42.6 points across a 5-game series against Detroit with 2 dislocated middle fingers taped together and the flu in Game 5. New York won it in overtime on the road.
Fourteen months later he tore the ACL and cartilage in his right knee. In 1985 that was the end, and the Knicks let him go while he rehabbed for 2 years.
He came back with Washington and averaged 28.4 points at 34 years old on a rebuilt knee, and made the All-Star team doing it. That is the part of the file nobody quotes, and it is the reason his name should be in the same sentence as the injuries that ended other careers.
Tomorrow: One hundred points, and the 4 things that had to be true.
